Pilates is a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. It is focused on building strength without bulk, improving flexibility, agility and posture and helping prevent and rehabilitate from injuries. The primary focus is spine awareness, proper breathing and core strength and flexibility. The desired outcome is a balanced, strong and supple body, flat stomach, balanced legs and a strong back. It can be done by someone with any level of fitness and can be adapted for some people with disabilities. Most people attend a Pilates class to learn how to do the exercises accurately.
